Trophyman Cup Final.

Mottisfont 2, Sporting BTC 1.

Mottisfont travelled to Hamble on a glorious evening, attempting to complete their second consecutive league and cup double against the same opponents as last year, Sporting BTC.

On a rock-hard surface, the Font made the more promising start and were quicker to tackle and were soon to prove how good a goalkeeper Nathan Parker is.

He made one-on-one saves from Alan Bundy, Guy Bewick and Jon Cook. But, in between, Sporting were trying to put some pressure on the Font defence, although finding them a hard nut to crack with Paul Fielder twice punching clear under heavy pressure.

Mottisfont had forced four corners and, from the fifth, they took the lead when Nigel Cutler floated a fine ball into the area and Guy Bewick rose majestically to firmly head into the net. Soon after it looked like they would increase their lead when Bewick raced clear, but he was thwarted once again by a fine dive from Parker. The interval arrived with Sporting trying to get back into the game.

At the beginning of the second half, they forced another corner which came to nothing. But then Sporting really started to put pressure on the Font defence of Fryer, Belbin, Cook, Morris and King, who was popping up everywhere.

Sporting were caught several times in an offside position, but they equalised when the trap failed for once when Ben Kneller broke away and rounded the keeper. His effort was blocked on the line but it broke to Shayne Flooks who forced it home for the equaliser. Sporting continued to keep the pressure on with the Font picking up some bookings.

With about 15 minutes remaining Michael King produced the shot of the game from fully 35 yards which crashed against the crossbar and Alan Bundy reacted the quickest to head home the winner with his 150th goal for the Font.

The Font defence held out with determined help from the hardworking midfield and could have increased their lead when Bewick broke clear twice but fired over the bar both times. Soon after, the whistle went with the triumphant Font side completing the double for the second year running.

Mike King was judged man of the match by the Trophyman representative. They were then presented with League and Cup Trophies to complete yet another wonderful season.
