JACK Smith believes there will be a few butterflies' around the County Ground with boss Paul Sturrock's axe set to fall today and admits a mouthwatering League One campaign is something they all want to be part of.

The Town defender is just one of many out of contract players waiting to hear their Swindon futures and, while confident he has done enough to extend his stay in Wiltshire, admits nothing is certain as Paul Sturrock's summer clear-out gets underway.

Sore heads have been the order of the day with continuous celebrations since Saturday's promotion, but Smith knows it is back to earth with a bump today as some are forced to say their Robins' final farewell.

Boss Sturrock has already stated players will be leaving the County Ground this summer and, until an offer is on the table, Smith is taking nothing for granted.

Only Lee Peacock, Phil Smith, Peter Brezovan and Sofiene Zaaboub are guaranteed to be around next season, with the remainder of the squad out of contract.

Smith said: "Of course there are going to be a few nerves around because no-one wants to be told they are not needed for next season.

"Promotion has been a squad effort this season and whoever has to go, it is going to be hard.

"But the manager has warned some will be going and so until we are told, I guess no-one really knows.

"I believe I have done okay this season and hope the manager feels I can be part of the team again in League One next season. I certainly hope to be offered a contract and hope to be here next season.

"A few beers have been drunk since Saturday and I have felt better but I guess you are back to reality today, with the manager needing to plan for the future."

The squad were due in to hear their fate yesterday but, handed a 24-hour stay of execution, Town's players will, by this afternoon, know more about what next season has in store for them.

With potential trips to Elland Road, the New Den, the City Ground and Kenilworth Road, Smith knows League One is more high profile than ever and believes Town are in the perfect position to hit the ground running.

He said: "It is quite amazing when you look at the teams that are in League One. There will be some very big games that everyone would want to be a part of.

"If anything it is going to be easier for us than the year we got relegated because we will be going into the new season full of confidence.

"It has been our aim all season and now we achieved it I certainly want to be back next season to have a go at making it a decent season in the league above."
