POLICE have issued a warning to local shops who sell alcohol after a 15-year-old was sold cider and beer.

CCTV operators watched as the boy left The New Wine Shop in Market Hill, Calne at 8pm on Tuesday April 10.

He was seen sharing the cider and beer with a group of young people nearby.

A police officer attended and took possession of the alcohol.

The 27-year-old staff member at the Wine Shop admitted to Jacqui Gallimore, the divisional licensing officer, that he had not questioned the youth about his age or asked for any form of identification.

A fixed penalty notice for £80 was issued for selling alcohol to a person aged under 18.

Sergeant Mark Rees from Calne Police said: "The New Wine shop is located on the edge of the recently established Dispersal Order and the issue of intoxicated young people in the area is a significant problem for the community.

"Licensed premises have a responsibility to everyone and under age sales such as this undermine the positive work that is being conducted by many other people and agencies."

He added: "Future breaches of the licensing legislation of this nature will result in positive action being taken against those responsible."
