Congratulations to all those obtaining A and A* grades in their exams, what a phenomenal achievement during these difficult times, and how gratifying that so many wish to pursue careers in medicine, particularly given our national shortage of doctors and nurses in the NHS.

What I do not understand however, is why some universities are trying to entice many of these students to defer taking up their places with offers of £10,000, plus accommodation fees paid for during their first year, if they chose to delay pursuing their medical courses.

What on earth is going on? Don’t we desperately need more doctors and nurses?

Why don’t these universities simply increase their teaching capacity to accommodate these medical students?

If anyone knows the answers to any of these questions I’d be very interested to know what they might be.
