Search parties were immediately dispatched after a boy fell over the cliffs at Freshwater.
E. F. Shutler had been hunting with his friend when he slipped and landed on the cliffs below, before his friend immediately raced back home to raise the alarm.
His body was found by police in the water just west of Tennyson Monument.

May 29, 1943
An 18-year-old convict from Camp Hill Prison, Frederick Walter Fox, ran away from a working party outside the prison and escaped into the forest.
He was caught three hours later in Calbourne by members of the police force and detectives.
Fox, who had been serving a five year sentence for manslaughter, was caught carrying an pickaxe through the woods.
He gave himself away by running when the policeman questioned his business.

May 25, 1968
A school inspection at Ryde School led to a family reunion for junior student, Stephen Dines.
Stephen was a member of the Combined Cadet Force and had been working with his force mates to impress the inspector, when he realised it was his cousin Lt. John Dines.
Lt. Dines was suitable impressed with the school's CCF, after they showed of their canoeing, tent pitching, model aircraft training and weapon work.

May 28, 1993
Lecturers at the IW College staged a one-day stoppage and launched a campaign as part of the on-going dispute over new contracts.
Picket lines were manned around the college site by members of the National Association of Teachers, who felt their conditions of employment could be eroded.
Principal of the college, Mr Bryan Marriott, was critical of the union leaders and employers' association for failing to negotiate a settlement.

The cost of diesel on the Island was the highest in the country as drivers paid £1.44.9 a litre in some rural outlets.

A group of Cowes sailors were caught up with protests in France over the raising prices globally, as they arrived in Deau-ville, Normandy, to a blockade of vessels flying the Jolly Roger.
