A MAN who committed burglary at The Hambrough Hotel in Ventnor, assaulted a police officer, shoplifted and resisted arrest — all while on a suspended sentence order — has been jailed.

Timothy Young, of Spring Gardens, Ventnor, was imprisoned for 18 months as he appeared at IW Crown Court last Friday.

In May last year, he was given 58 weeks suspended for 12 months for burglary and theft offences.

Just four months later, he committed another burglary at The Hambrough Hotel in Ventnor.

He denied this offence, but DNA left at the crime scene led to a conviction following trial in the magistrates court.

Then in December and January, he committed a further three non-dwelling burglaries by stealing or attempting to steal from sheds, Gary Venturi, prosecuting, told the court.

In February, Young assaulted a police officer while trying to escape TK Maxx after swapping his shoes for new ones.

After a chase around the aisles, Young charged into the police officer with an outstretched hand, knocking him to the ground, Mr Venturi told the court.

Young fell down too and a member of the public helped the officer arrest him.

Young also stole two bottles of perfume from Asda on April 1, and was identified by CCTV.

On May 2, Young was due to appear in court for these matters, but did not show up, so a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Police went to his address and found him upstairs, but he jumped over the bannisters to escape and pushed one officer into a hot stove, causing her minor injuries, Mr Venturi said.

Young said his benefits has been stopped and the lack of financial resources led him to these offences. He said he didn't come to court because he had a panic attack.

Judge Susan Evans activated eight months of Young's suspended sentence and sentenced him to a further 10 months.

Judge Evans said: "You have a long history of offending, including violence, dishonesty and drugs."
