A HUNGRY drink-driver, who collided with a bus on his way to pick up food at the McDonald's drive-through, has been banned from the roads for 18 months.

David Algar-Silk, 29, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court last Tuesday, where he admitted one count of driving while over the limit.

The court heard he had driven all the way from his home in Sandy Lane, Shanklin, on July 20, heading towards the drive-through at Brading Road, Ryde.

He made it to New Street, Brading, before crashing into the back of a Southern Vectis bus.

Prosecutor Ann Smout said: "At half-past midnight the police were called to a collision between a blue Ford KA and a Southern Vectis bus.

"Mr Algar-Silk admitted he was the driver but initially claimed he had only had one drink."

When police breathalysed him at the scene, he gave a breath alcohol reading of 66 — almost double the legal limit of 35.

Barry Arnett, defending, said: "He thought he would be safe to drive and he thought he was just going to get some food from McDonald's.

"He says he has been very foolish, and now his car is completely written off."

Presiding magistrate Ann Evans said: "Excess alcohol is bad at any time, and we can't imagine the distress you must have caused people on that bus."

Algar-Silk was disqualified from driving for 18 months and fined £220.

He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £32 surcharge.
