AN EARLY hours Mayday call saw Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team and Bembridge RNLI out searching the waters.

The coastguard team was tasked at 2.45am this morning (Monday) to St Catherine’s Point off the south coast of the Island.

They carried out a shoreline search from Castlehaven to Chale Bay but nothing was seen.

RNLB Alfred Albert Williams from Bembridge was launched at 4.47am to conduct a shoreline search from one mile east of St Catherine's Point to one mile west.

After a sweep in quite lumpy conditions, nothing of any significance was found.

The call-out came following a spoken word mayday picked up on the Boniface Down aerial.
