THE main Ventnor Carnival procession might have been washed out but the party still carried on — all week.

Wednesday's high winds put paid to the main carnival but an illuminated version went ahead on Saturday night.

The children's carnival parade was scrapped but judging took place in St Catherine's Church and there were plenty of entries.

There were also other events around the town during the week, and several shops took charity boxes to drum up funds for the committee, who lost out on donations when the parade was cancelled.

Teresa Preston, carnival committee chairman, said: "We had a packed church for the children's judging which was very good considering the weather.

"So much work had gone into the costumes, I was amazed.

"Best overall was Isabella Pedreschi as Princess Jasmine, who had a carpet on wheels. She even did a little dance for us.

"Another good entry was Save Our Seas, all about plastic pollution."

To celebrate the 130th year of the carnival, Eloise Preston has published a booklet about Ventnor Carnival 1889 to 1950, in conjunction with Ventnor Heritage Centre.

It is available from Seasons, Wendy's, and the heritage centre.
