MORE than 1,100 people turned out to Bembridge RNLI Lifeboat Station’s annual open day on Saturday.

Visitors could inspect the inshore and all-weather lifeboats and were treated to entertainment and attractions for all ages, both on-shore and in the offshore boathouse.

As well as being a fun event, there was an important message of how to keep safe in, on and around the sea.

The lifeboat’s coastal safety team, together with HM Coastguard, gave out valuable advice to visitors, and more than 200 people expressed particular interest in safety issues.

Visitors were also offered the opportunity to go aboard an all-weather lifeboat in groups guided by crew members and witness how the high-tech craft is operated.

The visits and education team was busy, with many youngsters expressing interest in the work of the lifeboats.

Just after midday, the offshore boathouse was packed with spectators to witness the launch of the Tamar class all-weather lifeboat Alfred Albert Williams, which, together with the inshore lifeboat Norman Harvey, entertained the crowds with a simulated rescue and display, demonstrating how the lifeboats can respond and operate in an emergency.

More than £3,000 was raised from sales of RNLI goods, refreshments, and from donations.
