THERE will be no further police action following a fire at Christ the King College's lower site overnight.

The Carisbrooke site is due to be demolished soon and no significant damage was caused.

As reported earlier, dozens of firefighters — from every Isle of Wight fire station —were drafted in through the night to tackle the blaze.

Crews from all ten fire stations worked through the night to control and eventually extinguish the fire, which was in the roof space of the single storey building on Wellington Road, Carisbrooke.

Fire engines were sent from Newport, Cowes, East Cowes, Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor, Freshwater, Yarmouth, Ryde and Bembridge.

Four appliances from Hampshire were also sent over for fire cover purposes.

An IW Police spokesperson said: "We were called regarding the small fire at an address in Wellington Road, at 11.18pm yesterday.

"No significant damage was caused.

"The site is due to be demolished soon and as such the owners do not request any further police action."

The Isle of Wight Council’s cabinet member for public protection, Cllr Tig Outlaw, said: “I would like to thank our fire and rescue service for their professionalism and swift action in dealing with this incident at this derelict site.

“Clearly the cause will be fully investigated, and the site, which was under the responsibility of contractors, will remain closed off.”

It is not believed the incident will affect the running of the school when it reopens next term.
