WHEN police carried out a drugs raid at Stephen Durkin's Ryde home, they found heroin, amphetamine and cannabis.

Durkin, 38, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court last Tuesday, where he admitted three counts of drug possession.

The court heard the raid was carried out at his Union Street flat on June 6.

Described in court as a struggling addict, he told police he had used heroin every other day for at least two years.

Prosecutor Ann Smout said: "The approximate street value of the drugs was £125, so it was by no means a large quantity."

Defending, Paul Farley said: "The police had obviously gone into this quite thoroughly, but found the drugs were purely for his own personal use.

"He has now started a rehabilitation programme. This was a wake-up call."

Durkin was fined £120 and ordered to pay court costs of £85 and a surcharge of £32.

Presiding magistrate Peter Readding said: "Perhaps we are being a little more lenient than normal, but that is because you have genuinely taken steps to better yourself."
