WESSEX LEAGUE CUP
COWES SPORTS 3, NEWPORT 2
ISLE of Wight football’s fiercest rivalry saw Cowes Sports edge past Newport in the second round of the Wessex League Cup — a bad-tempered tie which saw three players sent off.
A bumper 228 crowd flocked to Westwood Park last night to watch a tie packed with everything.
The opening goal went to Port after ten minutes — a calamity for Yachtsmen defender, Dom Sexton, who flicked it over keeper, Ed Hatt, when attempting to clear.
Cowes were on level terms three minutes later when a cross was headed by Jez Conway under keeper, Gary Streeter, from close in.
Port’s Charlie Urry, who almost scored with a chip, was sin-binned for dissent, but Cowes failed to add any further goals before the interval.
But on 51 minutes, Ash Brett put Cowes in front with a volley from a corner.
Within minutes of the goal, Yachtsman, Michael McEnery, and Newport’s Ben Timbrell were red-carded.
Brett almost added his second before Port’s Mark Taylor was given his marching orders.
On 78 minutes, Jimmy Wykes scores a blinder for 3-1, which left Streeter rooted to the spot.
Newport made it a nervy final few minutes when Neo Lamb pulled it back to 3-2, but Cowes managed to hang on for a famous derby victory.
