WIGHTLINK has apologised after customers were delayed due to a problem with the new contactless payment machine at Ryde Pier.

Customers heading to the FastCat were unable to swipe their cards at the barrier — although a Wightlink spokesperson said it was not thought anyone missed their sailing.

"Wightlink is sorry some customers were delayed on Sunday by a technical issue affecting the new contactless payment technology on Ryde Pier. It has now been resolved," said the spokesperson.

"The system requires customers to place their contactless card on the pad for three seconds for payment to be authorised."

As reported, Wightlink has doubled the toll from £1 to £2 for cash payments, with a cheaper £1.30 charge for contactless payments.
