AN ISLE of Wight resident has started a petition to ban super trawlers from fishing in UK waters.

Alistair Chisholm, of Bembridge, started the petition after the Margiris ­— the second largest trawler in the world ­— was spotted off the coast of the Isle of Wight.

The petition, which has collected 17,000 signatures in less than a week, calls on the UK Government to work internationally to ban such trawlers and remove them from UK waters.

The government is obliged to respond to all petitions with more than 10,000 signatures.
