THE weather again put a stop to the vast majority of football matches due to be played on the Isle of Wight this afternoon (Saturday).

In the second round of the Hampshire Trophy, Carisbrooke United were hammered 13-2 at Clatterford Rec at the hands of Bournemouth Manor.

To ensure the game went ahead, ahead of the worst of the rain, it kicked off at 12.30pm.

Following their recent 16-0 defeat away at Shanklin in Division 1 of the Harwoods Islnd League, Bournemouth Manor were on course to possibly beat it after going 8-0 up at the interval.

Shanklin, the side who recorded that record win against Carisbrooke, hosted Liphook at the County Ground and came away with a 5-2 victory.

Pete Wilson, who hit five of those goals against Carisbrooke, was on the score sheet again today.

They play Warsash in the next round.

Cowes Sports were beaten 5-2 away at Hamworthy United in one of the few games in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier to survive the weather. 

The Yachtsmen were 2-2 at the interval and playing some of their best football this season, thanks to goals by Jimmy Wykes and Gareth Bricknell.

In Division 1 of the Sydenhams Wessex League, there was heartbreak for Newport away at New Milton Town, who were sunk by a winner in injury time to lose 1-0.

Newport, who rued missed chances in the game, remain ninth.

East Cowes Vics' game at home to Verwood Town in Division 1 was called off.

Northwood St John won a seven-goal thriller 4-3 at home against Lymington.

In Combination 1, Whitecroft and Barton Reserves lost 3-1 at home to Northwood St John Reserves, while in Combination 2, Osborne Coburg Reserves cruised to a 7-0 win home to Newchurch Reserves.
