THREE deer have been killed at the Isle of Wight Deer Park — probably by a large dog running loose.

The owner of Newclose Farm on Nunnery Lane, Newport, have appealed to people to contact them 'day or night' if anyone spots a dog off a leash on their farmland.

In a statement on Facebook, the farm said: "This weekend we have had an issue with a large carnivore (99 per cent sure it is a big dog) that has entered the farm and killed three young (two fawns and one calve).

"If you see any dogs without a leash around the farm, please do give us a call day or night at 01983 638680.

"Dogs have the same instincts as wolves and once they learn how to stalk its prey, they enjoy doing so again and again.

"Farmed animals have no defence against these type of attacks.

"If you are driving, riding or walking around the area we need your assistance while we set up cameras in the perimeter as presently they are only in a few locations. Thank you for your help."

There has been a small herd grazing the land for more than 15 years, unbeknown to many local residents, but since recently being acquired by Natural Farm Produce, 70 additional deer have been introduced.
