MOUNTBATTEN'S annual Light up a Life campaign has launched for Christmas.

Islanders are urged to take time to remember and celebrate the lives of those who have died, by making a donation to dedicate a light in memory.

Light up a Life is for everybody, not only for patients and families supported by Mountbatten.

All are welcome to dedicate a light on Mountbatten’s Remembrance Tree and attend a special Light up a Life service at 4pm on Sunday, December 1, at the hospice.

Around 400 people are expected to attend the outdoor service where carols are sung, readings are shared, and prayers are said.

Afterwards, people will gather in the John Cheverton Centre to enjoy a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie.

There is also the opportunity to view the Book of Remembrance and write a personal message on the dedication tree.

Among those attending last year's event were Charlotte Humphrey and her daughters Maisy, nine, and Tilly, six, from Ryde, who were remembering their Nanny.

Charlotte said: “Attending the Light up a Life service at Mountbatten gave my family a time to come together and remember my mum, Shirley Batchelor.

"It was a beautiful, touching service, which my children were able to be part of.

"Being able to dedicate a light on the tree to their Nanny and write a message for her was lovely.”

Due to the popularity of the event, this year there will be a free park and ride service from Seaclose Recreation Ground between 3pm and 6pm.

Only disabled parking will be allowed in the hospice car park.

Those unable to attend can still take part by making a donation to dedicate a light in memory of a loved one.

Throughout December, the Book of Remembrance will be updated, and all are welcome to add their own message to the dedication tree.

Last year, more than £18,000 was raised to support Mountbatten’s work in caring for Islanders facing death, dying and bereavement.

Dedicate a light online at mountbatten.org.uk/light or over the phone on 217300.

There is also a postal option or you can visit Mountbatten’s fundraising office or shops.

There are several other Light up a Life services throughout December in churches and venues across the Island.
