AN EMERGENCY footpath closure has been put in place in Shanklin due to a collapsed sewer — and sewage has been seen overflowing in the road.

Access to Osborne Steps will be closed for a maximum period of five days from today (Thursday), while work is carried out by Southern Water.

This is the second time in six weeks sewage has overflowed near the steps.

In November, Southern Water installed a pump to redirect water from an open manhole cover to a nearby pumping station.

It is not yet known if the two issues are directly related to one another.

Island Roads said diversions will be signposted.
