A BUSINESSMAN banged his girlfriend's head repeatedly against a wall — causing her head to split open — before she fled the house in her pyjamas, the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court heard.

Kevin Rann, 51, of Sandford, Godshill, admitted assault by beating at the court on Tuesday (December 17).

Ann Smout, prosecuting, said he pushed his partner into a wall, cutting her head open.

He followed her round the house, banging her head repeatedly against the wall.

She tried to get into her car but he took the keys, so she ran into Godshill, wearing her pyjamas, and was taken by a passing van driver to a friend's house.

She had to have her head injury glued together.

Olivia Haggar, for Rann, said the couple were no longer together after their five-year relationship, and Rann had no previous record of violence.

She said: "It was a completely isolated incident, totally out of character."

She said Rann runs his own groundworks business which employs 13 people.

Judge Anthony Callaway gave Rann a 12-month community order to include 100 hours of unpaid work, and a five-year restraining order banning him from contacting his former partner.

He must pay his victim £500 and pay £85 court costs.
