POLICE stopped a car after noticing the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt — then arrested the driver for failing a drug test.

Alf Carey, 20, of Weston Road, Totland, pleaded guilty to drug driving when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

The court heard police stopped Carey's car at Dodnor Lane, Newport, on August 25, and a subsequent revealed he had taken cocaine.

Prosecutor Vivian Ducie said: "One passenger wasn't wearing a seatbelt so, as is routine, the police performed a roadside test on the driver which turned up a positive result for cocaine."

Liz Miller, defending, said: "He had taken it the night before and thought it would have left his system.

"It's important to note he was not stopped for the quality of his driving.

"He tells me that since this incident he hasn't touched drugs.

"He is incredibly sorry and realises he's going to have to get up a lot earlier to get to work."

Carey was banned from driving for 12 months.

He was fined £240 and ordered to pay court costs of £85 and a surcharge of £32.
