AN ISLAND herder, who sold one of his bulls to the Queen for Balmoral, has been been acknowledged for his Highland Cattle's breeding skills in an national competition.

Michael Poland won the title of best large herd, awarded when the Highland Cattle Society held its National Fold competition.

Mr Poland said: "It's such a tremendous compliment to have won the award. It means more to us than any other we have previously achieved.

"In the past we have sold a bull to the Queen for her herd at Balmoral, which we were very satisfied with as we know that it is an excellent fold.

"This award reflects the fold’s overall high and even quality we aim for. It is a great credit to the team who work with me."

Judge, Matt Auld, said: "I was very impressed with the high standard of the 12 folds I visited.

"It was the stature, uniformity, and femininity of the Earn and Mottistone Folds that caught my eye and earned them the top prize in their sections."
