A MAN has appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court, charged with starting Sunday's fire at the Travelodge in Newport.

David Rumalshah, 54, of no fixed abode, appeared in court today (Tuesday), charged with one count of arson.

He did not enter a plea.

As reported, emergency crews were called to the Lugley Street hotel to tackle a fire in a bedroom.

As a result of the blaze, the court heard Rumalshah was taken to St Mary's Hospital for treatment.

The case was adjourned to the Isle of Wight Crown Court on February 24.

Rumalshah was remanded in custody.
