A RECORD audience of more than 140 people visited Mountbatten's John Cheverton Centre in Newport for a 19-song set from one of the Isle of Wight's most popular ensembles.

Four-piece folk-rockers Lucid performed an expansive assortment of original material as well as covering classic tracks from bands such as the Beatles, Eagles and Fleetwood Mac — the quartet's dovetailing vocal melodies and reverberating acoustics adding fresh gloss to the latter.

The unlikely highlight of the set was a haunting re-imagination of heavy metal icons Metallica's Nothing Else Matters, which dripped with emotive strains of violin and dulcet intonation.

A £10 entry fee included canapes, wine and a range of other sweet and savoury sustenance, as Mountbatten hosted an evening of hospitality.

More than £1,400 was raised through ticket sales, with the band additionally donating half the night's CD sales to the charity.

Lucid's violinist, singer and guitarist, Nik Potts, said: "It's great to perform on behalf of this fantastic cause and nice being Mountbatten's first act of the new decade.

"It was daunting when we got there as we didn't expect so many people.

"If all these events are as well attended then it should be a fantastic year for the charity."

Mountbatten provides end of life care and bereavement support to anyone living on the Island.
