A FORMER JS White shipbuilder died following a long battle with heart and lung disorders, exacerbated by asbestos exposure.

An inquest into the death of Terence Gandy, 76, of Manor Crescent, Newport, was held at the Isle of Wight Coroner's Court last week.

Mr Gandy died at St Mary's Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for sepsis, on May 18.

The inquest heard Mr Gandy worked at JS White's, in Cowes, alongside other jobs in the marine industry, including onboard a nuclear submarine.

He had suffered with health conditions including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and pneumonia, and had previously been a heavy smoker.

Due to the presence of asbestos, found during a post mortem, Isle of Wight Coroner Caroline Sumeray concluded he died due to an industrial disease.
