A MAN has admitted attacking his partner in the street — by pinning her against a wall by her throat and throwing her to the ground — as a group of children looked on.

James Brown, 28, of Vernon Square, Ryde, pleaded guilty to assault when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court yesterday (Monday).

The court heard they had gone out for a Boxing Day meal in Ryde when an argument started.

Prosecutor Ann Smout said: "At around 11pm, his partner decided she wanted to leave.

"She asked Mr Brown for the keys to the property that they shared, and an argument ensued.

"It was witnessed by a group of children, aged 12 to 14, who saw him pull the victim to the ground by her hair.

"Another group of onlookers told police Mr Brown had pinned the victim to a wall by her throat, before throwing her to the ground."

The court heard Brown's partner refused to support the charges against him.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said: "This is an ongoing, two-year relationship. In the months leading up to the incident, they had been having some difficulties, but thought moving in together might fix that.

"They were out with Mr Brown's family, and something was said that caused his partner to become upset.

"She wouldn't tell him what it was. He said he had followed her outside to make sure she was ok."

Magistrates sentenced Brown to a 12-month community order, including 100 hours of unpaid work and ten rehabilitation activity days.

He was ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a £90 surcharge.
