A MAN hit his mother with her own crutches after she kicked him out of her house.

Glenn Stevens, 35, of Medina Avenue, Newport, was sentenced at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Monday.

He was found guilty of assault following a trial in November.

The court heard Stevens' mother had asked him to leave her Lake home, where he lived, after their relationship broke down.

Prosecutor Ann Smout said: "At around 9pm, on November 6, Mr Stevens' mother was taking shopping from her car into her home.

"She saw her son coming towards her. He said he wanted to go inside and told her, 'you will bloody listen to me.'

"She stood with her back against the front door. He pushed her twice — once against the door, and again against a street sign.

"She hit him on the side of the leg with one of her crutches — at which point he snatched the crutch away and hit her on the left arm, leaving her with severe bruising."

The court heard Stevens was confronted by his mother's neighbours, who called the police.

Barry Arnett, defending, said: "Its refreshing when you have someone who, after being found guilty at trial, clearly shows such regret and remorse for his actions.

"He is quite a vulnerable man, he suffers with borderline personality disorder and previously used alcohol to self-medicate.

"This was a one-off. It's always really sad when a familial relationship breaks down."

Magistrates sentenced Stevens to a 12-month community order, including 20 rehabilitation activity days.

He was fined £60 and ordered to pay £250 in court costs and a £90 surcharge.
