FIRE crews have been called to Jewson in Newport this morning (Thursday).

Crews from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to Jewson's building supplies on Trafalgar Road at 9.30pm.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "We have sent one appliance from Newport, a second from East Cowes and a third from Ryde.

"Crews are still on the scene."

Update 10.15am: Both entrances have been sealed off, but there is little in the way of smoke or flames apparent from the road.

Update 11.15am: A Jewson spokesperson said: "We can confirm that there was a fire incident at our Jewson Newport branch this morning.

"We’re pleased to say that no-one was injured and everyone at the branch is safe.

"Unfortunately the branch is currently closed but we are working hard to be able to get the branch into a position to reopen shortly.

"We’re working with the fire service to understand the cause of the fire and will be conducting our own investigation as well."

Update 11.45am: The branch will re-open at 12.30pm.

Update 1pm: A spokesperson for Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: " We mobilised to Jewsons on Trafalgar Road for a fire in the baler and extraction ducting.

Two Hose reel jets, a positive pressure ventilation fan and an ariel appliance were used to extinguish and prevent the fire from spreading.

"Good work by all crews that attended."
