A RUNCORN student has been named St John Ambulance’s Cadet of the Year for Cheshire and Merseyside.

Charlie Anderson, 16, has volunteered with the health and first aid charity for more than two years, and hopes to become a paramedic.

Charlie, who attends Sandymoor Ormiston Academy, said: "When I heard about the contest I was very excited, and participating in the district competition day was such an amazing experience; being able to complete fun tasks and activities at the competition relieved me of my stress and I also made a few friends.

"Being made Cadet of the Year for Cheshire and Merseyside is an amazing achievement for me and I am so pleased to have been given this opportunity."

In September, Charlie will start a nursing cadet programme at college, as he aims for a career in emergency medicine.

He added: "I've wanted to be a paramedic since a young age and St John has allowed me to explore this dream.

"I am very passionate about helping those in need; I also find it extremely rewarding and couldn't think of a more fulfilling career."

Charlie will be one of almost 40 young people vying for the National Cadet of the Year title.

The winner will represent St John Ambulance’s young people at ceremonial occasions and Royal functions.
