A WOMAN who succumbed to the lure of the IW more than 40 years ago has already started celebrating her 100th birthday.

Joan Ede was born on February 23, 1920, in Weybridge, Surrey, growing up alongside siblings, Elizabeth and Pam, 90.

Training as a secretary, Joan was involved with voluntary work and drove an ambulance during the Second World War. After the war, Joan married Pat — who shared her passion for cycling and sailing — in 1946, and they had three sons: Peter, Bob and William.

She met Pat when he spotted her carrying cheques to the National Westminster Bank where he worked.

After having children, Joan devoted her time to her family. The couple relocated from Surrey to Hampshire to enjoy sailing and then moved to Yaverland.

After Pat died in 1998, Joan hosted regular games afternoons around the Island.

Joan said: “Pat and I never argued once in all the time we were together.”

Joan finally stopped cycling in her 90s.

Her family includes seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren spread across the globe. Joan enjoyed a pre-birthday lunch last weekend with grandchildren, Elissa and Dan, and great-grandchildren, Emily, Stella and baby Poppy.
