A TREE, which has taken centre stage on Colwell Common for generations, is the latest victim of Storm Ciara.

The tree, part of the willow family, suffered damage during the recent storm.

Totland parish clerk, Helen Gibbs, said: "Sadly, Storm Ciara damaged a large branch on the tree.

"The following day when the weather had calmed, Totland Parish Council contacted the tree surgeon who inspected the damage and to look at the possibility of just removing the branch.

"However, on full inspection, it was hollow and, with fungus on one side, the tree was seen as dangerous if left as it was. The recommendation was to remove."

Local resident Brigette Minassian said: "I remember when my children were growing up, lots of families would have picnics on the Common on a sunny day and the kids were always climbing up and down the tree. It's such a shame."

Over the years, several branches have been cut from the tree for safety reasons, but it is hoped that, because it is part of the willow family, it may sprout again.
