A GOSSIP of mermaids was spotted in Freshwater at the West Wight Sports and Community Centre.

The invasion of the 25 fish-tailed swimmers formed part of the centre's half-term activity programme.

Centre manager Clare Griffin said: "It was fantastic to see so many children taking part.

"We were busy throughout the week with additional classes added to our programme including an extra climbing session for teenagers.

"Other popular classes included snorkelling and raft racing.

"We are delighted with the response to our half term programme of activities and it's fantastic to see so many children enjoying our facilities and taking part in physical activity.

"While the weather was gloomy outside, it was lovely and warm and safe here.

"We loved seeing so many children having fun under our roof."
