POLICE were called to a report of a serious sexual assault on a teenage girl in Newport on Saturday night.

A 15 year-old girl was reportedly attacked at Snook's Hill, near Coppins Bridge, shortly after 11pm.

The attack was alleged to have happened in the pedestrian tunnel connecting Newport Quay and Fairlee Road.

An Isle of Wight Police spokesperson said: "We are investigating an incident of serious sexual assault against a 15-year-old girl which was reported on Saturday.

"The incident happened in an area near Snook’s Hill in Newport.

"At this very early stage of the investigation, we are trying to ascertain the exact circumstances of what happened and are supporting the individual concerned.

"We do not believe there is a risk to the wider public. Our enquiries are ongoing."
