CARPHONE Warehouse has announced it will soon be closing all of its standalone stores — which means its branch on Newport High Street is under threat.

On April 3, the mobile phone retailer is set to close all of its 531 standalone stores, resulting in 2,900 redundancies.

Shops inside 305 big PC World and Curry's store will be not affected by the changes.

The firm said customers were increasingly buying online and from its big stores instead of its smaller, standalone mobile shops.

It says the move is not related to the coronavirus outbreak, but because of the changing mobile market.

The firm said almost 40 per cent of staff affected by the closures are expected to take new roles in the business.
