Ordinary people, aged between 18 to 70, can sit as a magistrate.

No formal qualifications are needed and training is provided.

Travel and subsistence is paid, and if you are employed you are legally entitled to take time off for the role.

The volunteer post involves dealing with cases relating to children, solving problems and making decisions that try to keep children safe and protect them from harm.

Working as a bench of three, taking advice from a trained legal advisor, Children and Family Court Advisory Service and the child’s guardian.

Typical cases include child protection and intervention in cases where parents have been separated.
