A MAN followed someone out of an inquest and into the court building toilets, before assaulting them — the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court heard.

Simon Michael Cant, 36, pleaded guilty to assault by beating, at the court on Tuesday, and was jailed for 18 weeks.

Cant, of no fixed address, was attending an inquest at the Isle of Wight Coroner's Court on December 12 when he discovered a man he had previously had a feud with, was also there.

The court heard the coroner's officer noticed there was tension between the two men during the proceedings, so when the victim got up to leave and Cant followed, the coroner's officer followed.

Ann Smout, prosecuting, said: "The coroner's officer could hear what sounded like a struggle coming from the men's toilets.

"When he opened the door he saw Mr Cant kneeling on the ground, leaning over the other man who was lying on the floor with his shirt in Mr Cant's grip.

"Mr Cant punched the victim in the face twice."

Ms Smout said Cant denied assaulting the man, and said the victim had fallen to the ground and he was helping him get up.

Barry Arnett, for Cant, said: "I won't repeat what was said, but suffice to say, something rather horrible was said to Mr Cant in those toilets that triggered that response.

"My client has had problems with addiction to certain substances for years.

"But now he is drug free, and he is proving to everyone he can and will stay out of trouble."
