POLICE are investigating after transphobic abuse was directed towards someone on Ryde Esplanade on Bank Holiday Monday.

A member of the public told the County Press there were large crowds of people around the Harbour Island bar area, and sent us a photo from the scene.

She said: "A transwoman was abused twice while walking through and on return with her dog, by numerous intoxicated male customers of the bar.

"Police were informed. Why should people walking their dog be abused or intimidated by drunks?"

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Police said: "We were called at 6.41pm on May 25, with reports of verbal and transphobic abuse being directed towards a member of the public on Ryde Esplanade.

“Officers are investigating the circumstances.”

The bar was operating within current guidelines by offering takeaway drinks.

A police spokesperson confirmed officers visited the bar to explain their responsibilities under the licensing act and to give guidance, saying they would continue to monitor the situation should further concerns be raised.
