PEOPLE travelling on public transport on the Isle of Wight will soon have to wear face masks.

Transport secretary Grant Shapps announced earlier today that as of Monday 15 June, non-medical face coverings will become mandatory on public transport throughout England.

Official advice from the World Health Organization (WHO) had previously recommended masks only to people showing symptoms and those caring for people suspected to have the virus.

Mr Shapps has said there will be exemptions for young children, but for others it will be compulsory.

He said: "We need to ensure every precaution is taken. Face coverings offer some, albeit limited, protection".

Those who fail to comply can be refused travel and passengers can also be fined.

Earlier, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said her government was considering making the wearing of face coverings mandatory in enclosed public spaces in Scotland.
