PARKING concerns have been raised in Wootton and Sandown, after residents complained about cars and vans clogging up residential areas.

In Sandown, there have been concerns around the areas of College Close and Perowne Way.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council confirmed a request had been received from the public to visit sites in College Close Industrial Estate and Perowne Way, Sandown in relation to parking concerns.

There was a joint visit between community safety and the police recently, and the owner of a number of vehicles was asked to remove them from both sites by next week.

Details of the vehicles were also submitted to the DVLA.

IW Police also mentioned the problem on their Facebook page after getting complaints.

They confirmed it was a problem caused by car traders, and one trader with more than 40 cars had been advised they needed to be moved or he would face prosecution.

The police said: "This advice will be checked over the coming months to prevent this issue emerging again."

In Wootton, Andy Hayhoe, of St Edmund's Walk, said there was a similar, persistent, problem of cars being parked in the road, in parking bays or the road itself.

He said: "We are being plagued with vehicles which are not taxed or MOT'd being dumped in our parking bays.

"It is getting ridiculous as genuine residents cannot park. These vehicles appear overnight.

"We all pay road tax and insurance while others dump cars anywhere and get away with it."

He said they nearly all have either no tax or no MOT, and he believed they were being left in the streets by mechanics who were working on the vehicles in order to sell them.

Wootton Parish Council member, Cllr Barry Abraham, said the parish council had been made aware of the problem. He said: "As far as I'm concerned these vehicles are illegally parked as they are not taxed or MOT'd. It is causing a problem.

"Island Roads are going to have a look for us."
