ISLAND Roads has released a further statement on the roadworks in East Cowes, after Cllr Karl Love spoke out yesterday (Thursday) and labelled it "total road and parking chaos".

Road works are underway in East Cowes as part of a project to rebuild and resurface part of York Avenue, and Mr Love was critical of the impact it was having on parking in the town.

One East Cowes resident also voiced concerns, and said signs were being put on people's cars, only for them to be towed away "a handful of hours later".

He said it was "ludicrous", and that while he was able to move his own car, having emailed Island Roads who explained, he said "it should not be down to the residents contacting them".

In a statement released today, Island Roads said: "Given the urgent nature of the road closure, it was unfortunately not possible to give the owners of some parked cars the customary notice period.

"As a result, a small number of cars on the diversion route were moved a short distance for safety reasons.

“The work is being undertaken at a time when the roads are quieter due to Covid-19 and reduced traffic flows due to the fewer ferry sailings.

"It is hoped that the work will be completed in two weeks and we thank local residents for their patience while this work is completed.

"Carriageway strengthening works at the York Ave/Victoria Grove junction were completed on Tuesday ahead of schedule and this allowed Victoria Grove to be opened and the length of the closure reduced.

“Work in other roads in the area are not on the diversion route and are much smaller schemes, however, they will help contribute to the overall road improvement in the area.

"We thank local residents for their patience while all this work is completed.”
