I am responding to your article (CP, 17-07-20) concerning the ongoing grumbles over Wightlink's ferry price of £118 for a single between Fishbourne and Portsmouth — It's cheaper for the three of us to fly to Spain on Ryanair...

I have travelled to Estonia on several occasions and have frequently used the vehicle ferry service between the mainland and the island of Saaremaa — Virtsu to Kuivastu, a distance of five miles compared to the three between the IW and Portsmouth.

I just checked the prices again on the Internet and the full single fare for a normal car is eight Euros plus three Euros for each adult passenger for non-residents of Saaremaa; it's 4.20 Euros and 1.50 Euros for residents, seniors and school pupils.

The ferries are very modern and the on-board catering prices reflect the fares.

I guess one difference is that in Estonia the ferries are considered as public services, not as profit-making businesses, but even so...
