The Isle of Wight Met Service says it may have to issue a level five heat alert on Saturday, as it warns the Isle of Wight could see temperatures into the early thirties by the weekend.

Island-based forecaster Jamie Russell says the mercury will start to rise today (Thursday), before reaching 29 or 30 celcuis on Friday and even higher on Saturday.

His charts suggest that although parts of the UK will cool down at the weekend, the Isle of Wight will buck the trend - with central and northwestern areas hitting 32 celcius, or even higher.

He says if that happens, it would trigger a level 5 heat alert.

Meanwhile, the national Met Office is now predicting highs of 30 celcius for the Isle of Wight on Saturday - with plenty of sunshine from later today (Thursday), until Monday.

It has issued an alert for the south of England - including the Isle of Wight.

A heatwave warning is issued by the Met Office, in this case level three, when threshold temperatures are reached for a day and the following night.

It said: "Look out for others, especially older people, young children and babies and those with underlying health conditions."
