A Freshwater lollipop lady, who also worked at the coronation of the Queen in 1953, will be remembered at a memorial service on the Isle of Wight next week.

Madge Joiner spent 37 years helping keep generations of children safe at All Saints primary school.

She was born in Ningwood in 1934.

In 1951, she joined the Women's Royal Army Corps (WRAC) and just two years later found herself helping to keep the Queen's coronation day running smoothly.

Madge left the WRAC in 1954, when she met long-serving Freshwater firefighter Fred Joiner.

The pair tied the knot at the village's All Saints' Church, in 1954 - where the service to remember Madge will also be held.

Her reign as a long-serving lollipop lady started in 1964.

She remained on patrol for nearly 40 years, eventually leaving to care for her husband when he became ill, until his death.

Daughter Anita Lucas told the County Press: "Mum loved the kids. She loved it when, as young grown-ups, they came back and tapped her on the shoulder to say hello.

"She had a great big lorry driver do that one day.

"He remembered her from crossing the road when he was a kid.

"Everybody knew her!"

Even Anita's husband, Peter Lucas, met his future mother-in-law on the crossing.
Anita told the County Press: “Mum stepped out to let the children cross and he rode up on his bike.

“He tried to inch forward but mum said, “You stay there!”

“When we had lunch one day, I said, “Come and meet my mum!”

“His face went pale!”

A memorial service will take place at All Saints' Church on Tuesday September 15, at 11:30am.

A service will also be held at the Isle of Wight crematorium, at 1:30pm.

On the day, at around 11:10am, the funeral cortege will pass through Freshwater and it will slow down at the crossing where Madge was based.

It will also pass Colwell Farm, where the family lived for a time, before travelling through Norton on its way to the church.

Due to space restrictions, the family requests you contact Anita through the memorial website, before attending a service.

Madge will be much-missed by Anita, sister Jacqui Rex and their brother Geoffrey Joiner and their families.

A second son, Bruce Joiner, pre-deceased his mum.

Donations will be split between the Royal British Legion and the RSPCA.
