THERE were mixed fortunes for two of the Isle of Wight's top clubs playing in the first round qualifying of the Buildbase FA Vase, with Cowes Sports going through on penalties and East Cowes Vics conceding late on as their tie was poised to go to a shoot-out.

Cowes Sports continued their excellent run of wins in cup competitions during the early part of the season when they faced Devizes Town at Westwood Park.

Devizes, who play in Division 1 of the Toolstation Western League, a league below the Yachtsmen's level, came up against a decent side — forcing it to penalties after it ended 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Cowes went through to the second qualifying round 5-4 on penalties to set up another home tie against Pagham, of Bognor Regis, who play in the Southern Combination Premier Division, on Saturday, October 10.

However, East Cowes Vics came up against strong opposition when they entertained Westbury United of the Toolstation Western League Premier.

It was backs to the wall for much of the tie, but after surviving the early stages, which included a penalty blazed over, Brandon Hayward gave Vics the lead on 27 minutes when he punished a mistake at the back.

Vics survived another penalty miss and were starting to think it might be their day.

However, the visitors' pressure eventually told and they equalised.

But just as it looked as though Vics might make it to the lottery of a penalty shoot-out, the referee awarded a third penalty to Westbury, which was the worst struck of the three, with the ball squirming over the arms of keeper Karl Steinborne-Busse.

Newport have a home tie against Calne Town, also of the Western League, Division 1, tomorrow afternoon (Sunday).

In Division 1 of the Harwoods Isle of Wight League, Whitecroft and Barton Sports steamrollered Ventnor 9-0 at home to make it two wins from two.

Bembridge continued their 100 per cent win record with a 1-0 win over Binstead and COB at Steyne Park, as did Shanklin, who beat West Wight 3-1.
