A number of hospital patients and staff were temporarily relocated this morning (Friday), after a light fitting fire triggered an alarm in maternity at St Mary's.

An electrical fault is being blamed for the incident, at around 7:45am.

The Isle of Wight NHS Trust says its safety protocols were followed and a small number of patients and staff were moved, while the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service carried out safety checks.

Fire crews from Newport and Cowes were called to the incident, but the fire was out when they got there and safety checks meant they were quickly able to give the all-clear.
