How might one balance the needs of the Island economy while keeping the Island as Covid-safe as possible to protect the community?
Rather than promoting the Island as a mass tourism location for all and sundry to visit, why not go upmarket and sell the Island more as an exclusive venue and aspirational location for more monied people to holiday in?
Fewer, but more affluent, visitor numbers would help keep the Island relatively Covid-free, which in turn would help promote the Island as a relatively safe location. Such a strategy would drive up demand for high-quality amenities and venues, cheap tatty ones would be forced to up their game or go out of business, which would be good for the Island’s profile generally.
The coronavirus pandemic provides a golden opportunity to reset the Island’s tourism trajectory.
