Amazon World near Sandown faces closure if it is not able to raise funds soon, a statement on the zoo's social media has revealed.

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted heavily upon the animal attraction, which has now asked the Government for financial assistance to ensure its survival.

Many zoos across the country were able to reopen after a change in government restrictions, but Amazon World has remained shut.

At least half of Amazon World's enclosures are indoors, meaning the attraction has been forced to remain closed and keep staff on furlough since March.

The statement issued by the company said: "Thank you to everyone for all your kind offers of support once again, your support throughout the year has helped tremendously but the worry is not over.

"Sadly, we have not made enough money during the last four months to guarantee our survival through to Easter 2021, we are asking the Government for help, however this is not guaranteed at this time.

"Any help would mean the world to us. Even though we are closed, our dedicated staff are continuing to work hard for all our beautiful animals."
