THE Shanklin and Godshill based Island Dance and Theatre Company has been awarded The John Travis Award for ‘Accessibility to Dance' at the Dance School of the Year Awards 2020.

Run by mother and daughter team Charlotte Kelly and Linda Smith, the school teaches a variety of disciplines and dance styles including Freestyle, ballet, tap and musical theatre.

During a disrupted year, which has seen lessons move online via Zoom, teachers have offered students singalongs, dining room discos, a parent group tea and natter and a range of online classes.

Due to Covid, the award ceremony was conducted virtually for the first time, replacing a black tie gala dinner and dance.

The competition — founded in 2013 by Anne Walker MBE — received more submissions than ever with entrants from America, Europe, Australia and Asia.

This is the second award the school has won at the prestigious ceremony in recent years, having scooped the overall Dance School of the Year gong in 2016.

Linda said: "We are very proud of all our dedicated pupils who have supported us throughout these trying months.

"We are looking forward to performing in the West End and at Disneyland Paris next year."
