A retirement home in Ryde is opening a Christmas grotto - aka a Covid-safe visiting pod - as the Isle of Wight enters Tier One, from next week.

St Vincent’s retirement home in Ryde has adorned the space with Christmas cheer.

It is dedicated to families visiting loved ones.

A bedroom has been transformed into a secure visiting room - by building a wall, dividing the room in two.

A spokesperson said: "We have gone all out and the residents love it. More care homes/nursing homes should try to do something similar.

"I wanted to create some magic, after the dreadful year."

The Isle of Wight is one of only three areas in Tier One, after this week's announcement.

Under the rules, which come into force when this second lockdown ends, visiting of family in care homes is only allowed if there are substantial screens or visiting pods, or if the visit is outside or through a window.

There have been widespread calls across the country, for the families of people in retirement and care homes to be given more access.

Most of the England is in Tier Two - with even stricter rules in place.

Gavin Terry, head of policy at Alzheimer’s Society, said thousands would be in “complete despair” and he has called for a national rollout of visits to “keep the spirit of Christmas alive”.
