My wife and I made a booking on November 26, with Red funnel to go and spend Christmas with our daughter for the five-day period we were allowed December 23-27

When the prime minister made the announcement on December 19 that we could only go there for the day we had no alternative but to cancel it and stay at home, especially as we are both in our seventies.

I called Red Funnel to cancel and was told I could either receive a credit for my £91.80 booking and would have until March 31 to make a new one, which I would be then able to use anytime in 2021.

The other alternative was I could receive back 50 per cent.

When I said I wanted a 100 per cent refund I was told under their T and Cs this was not possible, so at the moment I have a credit.

I was also told that if I make a booking and it’s less than my original booking I would lose the remainder, but if it was more expensive I would have to pay the difference — a win-win situation for Red Funnel.

When the government changed the rules regarding Christmas they said nobody would lose out and would be able to claim back the cost of cancelled travel arrangements in full .

We have abided by all the rules set out by the government (shame everyone else doesn’t do the same ) .
